Abstract
In systemic sclerosis (SSc), we can develop hearing and balance disorders as a result of immune-mediated vasculitis and fibrosis in the inner ear. The objective of this study was to evaluate the function of organ of hearing in patients with SSc with the duration of the disease and Raynaud's phenomenon and also by type and severity of the disease.
Were enrolled in 20 unselected patients with systemic sclerosis diagnosed according to international diagnostic criteria of <American Rheumatism Association (1982)>.
The control group consisted of 26 healthy people 'otologicamente' SSc group matched for age and sex. The case history (Case History) was recorded for all patients by questionnaire data.
ENT-examinations were performed laringoiatrici and audiological tests (audiometry tone, speech audiometry, impedance audiometry and auditory brainstem response-ABR).
In history, 60% of patients reported dizziness, headache 55%, 50% tinnitus, 40% hyperacusis, hearing loss by 40% and 30% ear fullness.
It was found that hearing thresholds of patients with SSc were significantly poorer than the control group for 0.5, 1, 6 and 8 kHz. In ABR there were differences between SSc and control groups, although it was observed an increase in average latency in the group of patients with limited SSc than in patients with diffuse systemic sclerosis.
In eight patients (40%) was observed sensorineural hearing loss, mostly bilateral and symmetrical. In addition, there was no relationship between the level of hearing and the duration with the type and severity of the disease.
The involvement of 'ear is common in systemic sclerosis and should be considered during diagnostic and therapeutic.
